We combat the cause of CO₂ emissions by reducing CO₂ emissions from web technologies instead of just offsetting them. In the future, you will have the opportunity to go one step further and invest in selected climate protection projects of our partners.
Our transparency explained
CO₂ compensation is an important but also sensitive topic. Our basic principles require maximum transparency, and we act accordingly. Compensation does not solve the underlying problem, which is why we focus first and foremost on perfect optimization of resources and thus saving CO₂ emissions. Saving CO₂ emissions actually protects the climate. But we go even further and track your CO₂ emissions with a constant eye on optimization potential to create more worry-free transparency for you and your environment. In future, you can also invest in selected climate protection projects run by our partners and make an additional contribution to climate protection.
For us, two aspects are important when it comes to the term GreenHosting. On the one hand, the origin of the energy used by the servers, where we rely on 100% renewable energy with our hosting partners, and on the other hand the settings of the servers and the content delivery network (if one is used). With our servers at Hetzner GmbH, 100% of the electricity is generated from hydro and wind power. Find out more here. If international hosting is used, we implement this with Cloudflare. With the individual settings of Cloudflare Enterprise, the data transfer can be optimized in a very targeted manner and Cloudflare itself relies on 100% renewable energies. Find out more here.

Our CO₂ optimization differs in terms of the setup used. If our self-developed ecombee setup is used for websites or e-shops, it is optimized from the start and automatically undergoes a continuous optimization audit and process. If it is a system from a third-party provider or managed by the customer, we will first carry out an audit. We then use the data obtained to create an individual optimization strategy. This strategy is then implemented, either by us or by the customer themselves. We recommend the Audit & Seal of our partner CleanerWeb for your web presence, so that you receive detailed reports for self-optimization and a seal for external presentation.
The CO₂ calculation consists of several steps and components; one page below describes a view in the front end of the web technology.
- To calculate the CO₂ value per page, we use the CO₂.js framework from the Green Web Foundation (
https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/co2-js/
). The Green Web Foundation is the largest (that we know of) international independent non-profit organization for the education and calculation of CO₂ emissions on the web.
In the calculation, we differentiate between a so-called first visit (uncached) and a recurring visit (cached) to the page. On the first visit, all resources (images, graphics, scripts, etc.) must be loaded from the server, whereas on a return visit, most of the resources have already been saved (cached) in the visitor’s browser.
